Sanu Jallow-Lockhart, an NCAA Division 1 indoor and outdoor All-American for women's national champion Arkansas and the No. 5 all-time collegiate 800-meter competitor at 1:59.29, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing for The Gambia in the Aug. 2 opening round in her Olympic debut in Paris. Jallow-Lockhart, 21, was born in Gambia and moved to the United States at age 9 and was adopted during her freshman year in high school at West Mecklenburg High in North Carolina by Janelle Johnson-Lockhart and Daszmar Lockhart. She reflects on earning the Olympic qualifying standard with her runner-up performance May 11 at the Southeastern Conference final in Florida, and how it led to the discussion with her family and the Arkansas coaching staff about the potential to represent Gambia in the Olympics. Jallow-Lockhart examines becoming only second female competitor in the country's history to qualify for the 800 at the Olympics, following Adama N'jie, who was unable to finish her first race in 1996 in Atlanta, and didn't advance past the first round in 2000 in Sydney and 2004 in Athens. She revisits running 2:00.40 in the Division 1 semifinals June 6 and 2:01.07 to secure sixth two days later in the NCAA championship race at Hayward Field in Oregon, contributing to the Razorbacks being able to sweep the women's indoor and outdoor team titles. Jallow-Lockhart analyzes the decision not to race and only focus on training since competing at the NCAA final, but highlights the importance of being able to return home to North Carolina and reconnecting with family as part of her preparation for the Olympics. She shares excitement for having so many Arkansas teammates also qualifying to compete in Paris, including Nickisha Pryce representing Jamaica and Amber Anning competing for Great Britain in the 400 meters, in addition to Rachel Glenn participating in the high jump and Kaylyn Brown being a member of the 4x400 relay pool for the United States, along with future Razorbacks' competitor Isabella Whittaker, a recent transfer from Penn. Jallow-Lockhart also expresses gratitude for the support and guidance from Arkansas coaches Chris Johnson and Boogie Johnson, in addition to sharing the inspiration she has gained from her teammates and the elite group of professional athletes who also train in Fayetteville. She also speaks about reconnecting in the 800 with fellow NCAA All-Americans Juliette Whittaker of Stanford competing for the U.S. and Oklahoma State graduate Gabija Galvydyte representing Lithuania. Jallow-Lockhart also discusses the blessing of being one of only three track and field athletes competing for Gambia in Paris, and the opportunity to use the global platform to inspire younger individuals to pursue their Olympic dreams in multiple sports.
